Know Your District
Geography
Located in northeast Bangladesh, bordering Meghalaya (India) to the north. The
district is dominated by haor basins — large shallow wetlands that flood seasonally.
The Haor Ecosystem
Haors are bowl-shaped floodplain depressions. The most significant is Tanguar Haor,
a UNESCO Ramsar Wetland. Seasonal flooding affects road access and public health patterns.
Sunamganj Town
The district headquarters sits on the northern bank of the Surma River. Nearest
major urban centre is Sylhet city (~80 km southeast) with an airport and rail connection.
Getting Here
From Dhaka: bus (~5–6 hrs) or train to Sylhet, then bus/CNG (~1.5 hrs) to
Sunamganj. From Sylhet city: direct bus or microbus via Shahjalal Road.
Culture & People
Home to the Baul-Marfati mystic folk tradition and the legendary poet Hason Raja
(1854–1922). The population speaks Sylheti dialect.
